Tuning the Toyota Chaser 1JZ – 520 HP Drift & Fast Road Weapon

Few cars embody the spirit of old-school Japanese performance quite like the Toyota Chaser. With its rear-wheel-drive layout, spacious four-door body, and legendary 1JZ engine, it’s earned cult status as both a drift machine and a fast-road sleeper. Recently, we had one in at Motorworx for mapping on an Apexi PowerFC ECU, running a Greddy TD06 25G turbo.

The Setup

This Chaser came well-prepared with a strong 1JZ build, upgraded fueling, and supporting modifications to match its big single turbo conversion. The Greddy TD06 25G is a proven unit that delivers serious top-end punch while retaining good response for street use – perfect for a car that’s equally at home going sideways or blasting down the motorway.

On the Dyno

After careful calibration of the Apexi PowerFC, we extracted an impressive 520 horsepower and 530 ft-lbs of torque. At the wheels, the Chaser delivered a solid 443 whp, showing just how capable the 1JZ platform is when paired with the right turbo and a precise tune. The power delivery is smooth yet ferocious, with torque available throughout the rev range to keep the car both drivable and explosive on demand.

The Result

The result is a true old-skool powerhouse – a four-door Japanese “taxi” with the heart of a drift car and the manners of a fast-road monster. With its combination of raw power and refined drivability, this Toyota Chaser is now set up perfectly for its dual role as a street cruiser and sideways machine.

At FC Tuning, we understand that every build has a purpose – whether that’s competitive drifting, track days, or spirited road driving. This Chaser now embodies the best of all worlds: reliable, responsive, and brutally fast when called upon.

The post TUNING THE TOYOTA 1JZ (Chaser) first appeared on FC TUNING.

Tuning the Toyota Celica GT4 – 350+ HP Road Car at Motorworx

At FC Tuning, we’re no strangers to the legendary Toyota Celica GT4 – a machine built to dominate rally stages but equally capable of delivering serious thrills on the road when mapped correctly. We’ve had the pleasure of working on numerous clients in the past, including this nice customer’s GT4 road car at Motorworx, with the goal of extracting reliable, usable performance without sacrificing drivability.

The Setup

This GT4 came in already boasting a healthy base of performance modifications. With a well-looked-after engine and supporting upgrades in place, the focus was on getting the most out of the setup while ensuring smooth delivery across the rev range.

On the Dyno

Once strapped down at Motorworx, we set to work calibrating the Apexi PowerFC ECU to balance power, torque, and safety. The Celica’s turbocharged 3S-GTE engine responded brilliantly to careful mapping. With optimised fuel and ignition adjustments, along with boost control refinement, the car produced over 350 horsepower with a strong torque curve that transforms the way it drives on the road.

The Result

The end result is exactly what the owner was looking for – a GT4 that feels alive yet predictable, pulling hard through the gears with minimal lag and excellent mid-range punch. It’s the kind of tune that makes the car not only faster but also far more enjoyable in everyday conditions.

At FC Tuning, we don’t just chase numbers – we tailor every calibration to the car’s intended use, whether that’s road, track, or competition. This Celica GT4 is now ready to deliver reliable performance on UK roads with all the character you’d expect from a rally-bred icon.

So lots of torque steer as we shake down the build of the FC Tuning Fiesta Race Car, built my Ford Specialists Geoff and Driven by his son Leroy and Tuned by Steve @ FC Tuning

Big props to Driver Leroy for absolutely sending it—2:12.02 lap time, shaving 5 seconds off his Saturday’s best and there is lots more to come

Huge shoutout to Geoff’s elite build prep and our custom FC Tune working in perfect harmony. Next stop will be a step up to ST460 as we look to get the most of the Garret G25-550 (a 480hp rated turbo)

That’s how you turn up the heat on track and put your work through its paces

Another perfect session to kick off the season, with plenty of real world data to review before the next engine mapping session.

RB25DETT Tuned to 400HP at Motorworx – Haltech ECU Magic

There’s nothing quite like unlocking the true potential of a single-turbo RB NEO engine—and this RB25DETT is a perfect example. Tuned by Steve @ Motorworx and running a Haltech Elite ECU, this beast can now put down a solid 400+ horsepower on high boost and 370 on low bost, and it’s as responsive as it is raw with its unique Tomei Turbo OEM bolt on in its low mount position.

The Setup

The RB25DETT is often overshadowed by its bigger brother, the RB26, but with the right setup, it’s a seriously capable platform. This engine came in clean and ready, but we knew there was more to be had with the right brain behind it—enter Haltech.

We opted for full Haltech engine management to take control of fueling, ignition, and boost. The ECU offered the flexibility and reliability needed to extract maximum performance while ensuring safety across all operating conditions.

The Tuning Process

The car rolled into the dyno at Motorworx, where we began by setting a solid base map. From there, we fine-tuned fuel delivery, adjusted timing for peak efficiency, and refined boost control to balance power and drivability.

Throughout the session, we closely monitored multiple channels live whilst tuning namely:

Fuel pressure

Boost pressure

AFR (Air-Fuel Ratio)

Oil pressure & temperature

Thanks to the Haltech ECU’s data-logging and real-time adjustment capabilities, we were able to find that sweet spot—where performance meets reliability.

The Result? A Clean 400HP +

There’s something satisfying about hitting a round number like 400hp, but this wasn’t about chasing a number—it was about smooth delivery, strong midrange torque, and a healthy safety buffer which heaps more room for scope.

The power delivery is linear and confident, with the Tomei Single turbos spooling quickly and holding boost strong all the way through the rev range. Whether it’s for spirited driving or weekend pulls, this R34 NEO RB25DETT is ready.

Final Thoughts

Over the nearly 3 decades it’s always a pleasure tuning RBs, but this one stood out for how well it responded to changes. Even with the original Nissan ECU with its FCTuningNistune ECU Solution, which got things initially going. Now with Haltech providing the brains, and Motorworx providing the tools and environment to get the job done, the result is a well-balanced 400hp street car with tons of personality.

Got a project in mind or want to wake up your own RB? Get in touch.

A question thats asked a lot and a good one too, the V6 is toyotas best kept engine secret. They tucked it away in the big cruiser of the range the toyota camry, if only they had the foresight to use this unit in the mk2 like we are doing today! It really doesn’t serve its full purpose in the heavyweight camry and is further strangled to death on a horrible auto gearbox.Having said that it still hauls the camry to 60 fairly quickly. But its in the mk2 Mr2 where it comes into its own.

The V6 in stock form, simply transplanted from camry to mr2 with no mods, will give you stock mr2 turbo performance but with big differences. (this performance claim is proven)

The differences being driveability, bottom end torque, silky smooth power delivery,an engine that purrs at idle and then roars like thunder on full throttle like only a v6 can.Quite simply the noise these things make is to die for but by far the best advantage is the throttle response….no lag with these fellas! The torque curve from 2000rpm to 2500rpm is practically vertical.

Enjoy the sweet sounds of this customers MR2 V6 in stock form, calibrated and controlled by a Haltech Elite ECU.

Here are a couple of great videos talking more about this lovely engine. One is a breakdown and the other talks about the variations. They aint making them like they used to.

Big Shout out to Izzy, who discovered us via the MR2 Forums, and as a result she took a scenic drive from Wales down to FC Tuning in England with a pretty cool mission: to spruce up her Toyota MR2 Rev 3. Now, this isn’t just any car; it’s powered by the legendary 3S-GTE engine, and we were all about giving it the TLC it deserved.

So, what was on the agenda? We started with installing Izzy’s already purchased classic Apexi PowerFC unit and wiping it back to its factory OEM settings. After a couple hours of set up, Izzy noticed a smoother ride and an overall improvement over the original settings. A new set of gapped spark plugs and a little tweak here and there were all it took to get rid of those annoying misfires at high speeds.

Given the car’s age – yep, it’s a 30-year-old gem – we decided to go easy on it. We gave the turbo a mild boost, enough to spice up the mid-range driving experience without pushing it too hard. It’s all about keeping things balanced, ensuring we can have more fun drives without any worries.

Looking to the future, I’ve got some ideas for Izzy’s MR2. Imagine it with a solid Twin plate clutch, ID1000 injectors, a beefy 450-liter per hour in tank fuel pump with a FPR at 3.5bar, and why not throw in a GTX30 Gen III turbo for good measure on a wrapped log manifold an either a FMIC or Charge Cooler? With these upgrades, we’re talking about serious torque and rear wheel power – enough to have a propa good blast on those Welsh mountain roads and leave everyone in the dust on the motorway.

Izzy, your MR2 is already a fantastic classic, and with a bit of further work, it’s going to be unstoppable. Can’t wait to see where you let me take it next. Keep cherishing this beauty and see you at the next car show in Wales

Remember to nudge those master techs of yours too about you know what

The inline-six 3.0-liter 7M-GTE engine was produced by Toyota in the late eighties and early nineties and pushed out 232 horsepower and 240 lbs of torque

It was nice to see one of these back in the workshop after a good few years of not even seeing many on UK roads. Adam’s fine example lends itself well to a little extra boost and without going mad an old skool emanage had already been mated to the factory Ecu to allow me to work some magic and get the engine setup as best as possible without the factory Ecu fighting back

Enjoy the final output. A nice increase over stock without pushing the turbo too much at all. In fact there are a few more ponies to be released at 1.2bar which would see a huge lift in low don torque.

Time to Get #FCTuned!

It was a pleasure to behold this mint-condition R34 GTT, which now boasts a GTX3076R turbo. The owner was just looking at response and around a comfortable 450bhp on light boost.

Remarkably, it remains on its stock block but it has been updated with an FCTuningNistune ECU Solution. This upgrade ensures the car retains as much of its original functionality as possible.

Nistune integrates seamlessly with these R34 models. For this particular one, I’ve incorporated:

Flex Fuel capabilities (preparing for future modifications)

Boost Limit Control

The retention of the OEM knock control

Launch Control.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates on our #FCTuned series!

The post TUNING THE NISSAN RB25DET (R34GTT) first appeared on FC TUNING.
