It was a journey working with this clients project, with the main issues being wiring gremlins from the previous owner. However, we persevered testing everything and achieved a nice result in the end. I also know there is a lot more in this humble CA as the tune was on a crude bleed valve. Once a decent electronic boost controller is fitted and setup with 740cc injectors fitted at a minimum we can then really crank up the GT28RS and see an easy 340-360hp. Now that phase 1 is complete, the owner can now enjoy the 250hp and get used to the power as it is, before cranking out a potential another 60-80hp on the next session.

Great work Alex. Got there in the end mate.

This Nissan CA18DET S13 had been sitting dormant in a South London garage for some time. It sported a Rocket Bunny kit and an Emerald ECU, but the owner was struggling to get it tuned and running properly.

When it first ran on the dyno, the CA18DET was producing just 168hp at under 1 bar of boost. That was well below what a healthy CA should make. A compression test and full engine check showed the engine had plenty of life left in it.

After 2 to 3 hours of fully setting up the ECU on the dyno, the humble CA was transformed. It lived to see another dual carriageway with a strong, reliable tune behind it.

The CA18DET is probably one of the best small turbocharged engines Nissan ever made. It is tough, tuneable, and very rewarding to work with. Hail the CA18DET.

There is still plenty of life in these great little engines. The Nissan CA18DET deserves all the respect it gets. It is one of the best small turbocharged engines Nissan ever produced — and a personal favourite here at FC Tuning.

This S13 was brought back to life with some TLC. The key upgrades were a GT2871R turbocharger and a full FCTuningNistune ECU solution. These two additions transform what the CA18DET is capable of.

The GT2871R spools quickly and delivers strong mid-range power. With the Nistune ECU providing precise control over fuelling and ignition timing, the result is a smooth and reliable power increase. It just does what it says on the tin. May the CA18DET live on forever.

The setup included a hybrid T28 turbo, Z32 MAF, 444cc injectors, and a healthy fuel pump to match a little more boost than factory.

The previous owner had the engine trying to run on a staged chip, but it was failing badly. The owner made the right call and junked it. They chose a FCTuningNistune ECU solution and a proper custom tune instead.

The performance speaks for itself. With next to no weight in an S13 shell, this little 1.8 continues to make us proud every time it is seen to properly. The CA18DET rewards good maintenance and quality tuning every time.

This Nissan CA18DET S13 with a GT28RS turbo was previously running an HD Stage 3 chip. This was simply not the right setup for the engine. As with any build, the engine must be custom tuned correctly — and that means either a proper ROM tune or a dedicated engine management system.

In this case, an FCTuningNistune ECU was the right choice. It gave us full control over fuelling, ignition timing, and boost management to build a tune specifically for this CA18DET and GT28RS combination.

After about an hour on the dyno, the car was performing much better in every area. Torque, acceleration, and overall power all improved. Most noticeably, the power delivery became much smoother through every gear. The Stage 3 chip could never have delivered results like this. A proper custom tune makes all the difference.

The post TUNING THE NISSAN CA18DET (S13) first appeared on FC TUNING.

Continuing with the first European tuning session of 2012 — FC Tuning was back in Holland at DP Engineering for Session 11. New and returning customers joined us for what was a busy and rewarding weekend of custom ECU tuning.

This video provides a preview of just two of the six engines tuned over the weekend. The individual session results will follow as separate posts. If you are based in Europe and considering attending an FC Tuning Holland session, this gives you a taste of what to expect.

FC Tuning Holland sessions bring together Japanese performance car owners from across mainland Europe. Each car receives a dedicated engine management tune on the dyno. The results speak for themselves. Enjoy, and a big thanks to Team PhotographD for their continued coverage and reviews. OK.. so we know that they are of a less quality (naming no names) but hey.. As for Bang for ya Buck well.. watch and see…. God knows what the exact spec of these units. Can anyone tell me… Even though we peaked this one testing at 1.9bar id say from this being the 3rd one ive done now that 1.6bar is really enough for the unknown spec.. The compressor simply doesnt cope well with high boost applications, but then what can you expect for a £250 quid kit :).. Still no doubt great fun on the motorway and im sure it will surprise a few people still.. Enjoy the turbo kick Dan!!

The post TUNING THE NISSAN CA18DET (S13) first appeared on FC TUNING.
